SUMMARY:Life Science Research Professor I
DESCRIPTION:An LSRP position is available in the laboratory of Dr. Matt van de Rijn in the Department of Pathology at Stanford University. \n\nOur lab applies cutting-edge high-throughput methods to study soft tissue sarcomas. We seek to understand the molecular underpinnings of these cancers\, with the goal of developing new diagnostic\, prognostic\, and/or predictive biomarkers and therapeutic targets that can be applied in clinical practice.  Our research interests include the genetic\, epigenetic\, and transcriptomic characteristics of various types of soft tissue tumors including leiomyosarcoma and leiomyoma. The LSRP will be involved in a research project that aims to perform molecular analyses of these tumors on a single cell level\, in order to better understand the biology\, evolution and clinical behavior of these tumors\, and to identify novel therapeutic strategies. Specifically\, LSRP will be making single cell and single nuclei preparations from different types of soft tissue tumors\, doing molecular profiling (DNA sequencing\, RNA sequencing\, and methylome profiling) and apply computational biology methods to analyze and interpret the next generation sequencing data.  The position also includes lab management tasks such as ordering supplies\, maintaining our slide/block/tissue inventory\, keeping detailed lab records\, and adhering to safety regulations. \n\nWe welcome candidates with a growth mindset\, interest in a variety of cancer research questions related to molecular underpinnings of disease\, and a willingness to take on challenging learning opportunities. \n\nIn addition to comparable research compensation\, candidates will have the opportunity to learn and to develop their C.V. or resume through research publications and presentations. \n\nDuties include: \n\n Plan and perform experiments in support of research projects in the laboratory based on knowledge of scientific theory. Interpret and perform basic analyses of the results.\nApply protocols for preparation of single cell and/or single nuclei suspension from fresh\, frozen\, and/or formalin fixed paraffin embedded tissue and subsequent library construction for next generation sequencing (sequencing performed at a core laboratory).  Sequencing data generated can be analyzed using existing software programs.  Downstream experiments may include designing a targeted sequencing test\, in situ hybridization\, and/or immunohistochemical biomarker testing.\nReview literature on an ongoing basis to remain current with new procedures and related research.\nApply the theories and methods of molecular and/or computational biology to interpret and perform analyses of experiment results; offer suggestions regarding modifications to procedures and protocols under supervision of a senior researcher.\nMaintain detailed records of experiments and outcomes.\nContribute to publication of findings as needed. Participate in the preparation of written documents\, including procedures\, presentations\, and proposals.\nHelp with general lab maintenance as needed; maintain lab stocks\, manage chemical inventory and safety records\, and provide general lab support as needed.\nAssist with orientation and training of new staff or students on lab procedures or techniques.\n\nDESIRED QUALIFICATIONS: \n\nA bachelor’s degree in biological sciences or a related field.\nPrevious experience or established knowledge of basic laboratory techniques in molecular biology.\nStrong analytical skills and excellent judgment.\nAbility to work under deadlines with general guidance is essential.\nMust be accurate\, efficient\, organized and have excellent record keeping abilities.\nAbility to work with team members in a cooperative fashion.\nExcellent communication skills.\n\n  \nEDUCATION & EXPERIENCE (REQUIRED): \n  \nBachelor’s degree in related scientific field. \n\nKNOWLEDGE\, SKILLS AND ABILITIES (REQUIRED): \n\nGeneral understanding of scientific principles. Demonstrated performance to use knowledge and skills when needed.\nDemonstrated ability to apply theoretical knowledge of science principals to problem solve work.\nAbility to maintain detailed records of experiments and outcomes.\nGeneral computer skills and ability to quickly learn and master computer programs\, databases\, and scientific applications.\nAbility to work under deadlines with general guidance.\nExcellent organizational skills and demonstrated ability to accurately complete detailed work.
