SUMMARY:Research Assistant I
DESCRIPTION:This position is security-sensitive and subject to Texas Education Code 51.215\, which authorizes UT Southwestern to obtain criminal history record information \nExperience and Education  \nMaster’s degree with major coursework in Biology or related fields\, and no experience required. \nBachelor’s degree with major coursework in Biology or related fields\, and one (1) year research experience at level of Research Technician or equivalent. \nTwo (2) years college with emphasis in coursework in field of assignment and four (4) years research experience including two (2) years at level of Research Technician or equivalent. \nHigh school graduation or GED and six (6) years research experience to include two (2) years at level of Research Technician or equivalent. \nShould have knowledge of basic molecular biology\, biochemistry and/or genetics. \nShould also have training in animal husbandry and PCR genotyping. \nJob Duties  \nA Research Assistant I position is available in the lab of Dr. Jian Xu in Children’s Research Institute. Our lab focuses on the intersection of gene regulation with stem cell biology\, hematopoiesis and cancer. \nWe employ epigenetics\, functional genomics\, genome editing\, biochemistry\, and mouse genetics to define epigenetic programs that control blood stem cell development\, and how these processes go awry in cancer progression. \nPrinciple Responsibilities: \nManage a multi-line mouse colony. This includes breeding\, genotyping animals and maintaining the database. \nPrepare and maintain tissue and cell cultures\, flow cytometry and other assays. \nContribute to lab organizational matters such as ordering supplies\, maintaining stocks and overseeing equipment. \nSecondary Responsibilities: \nPerforms more difficult scientific and medical research work in science area such as biology\, chemistry\, physics\, or other related scientific field. \nConstructs\, assembles\, and operates laboratory equipment and apparatus. \nRecords and evaluates data obtained from work assignments for use in scientific papers. \nCollaborates with supervisor or other research personnel in preparation of scientific papers for publication. \nReads literature and confers with supervisor concerning procedures and implementation. \nCollects and organizes research data for project reports. \nMay plan for\, and provide working supervision to\, work of Research Technicians or other laboratory personnel of lower grade.
