DESCRIPTION:The Department of Biochemistry & Molecular Genetics at University of Illinois College of Medicine is embarking on a new initiative in epigenetics\, systems biology and areas related to Departmental interests. The initiative will involve the recruitment of several junior faculty (tenure track Assistant Professors). The areas of expertise we anticipate recruiting include biochemistry\, molecular genetics\, cell biology and bioinformatics as they apply to the investigation of healthy and disease states. The Department has a rich intellectual environment in biomedical research encompassing structural biology\, signal transduction\, membrane biology\, control of gene expression\, cell cycle regulation\, cell metabolism and cancer biology. We plan to recruit 3-5 junior faculty over the next several years.  Candidates will be expected to have a PhD\, completed productive post-doctoral fellowship training and be poised to establish their own independent research. The successful candidate will be involved in independent and collaborative research focusing on translational and clinical genetics and genomics. The successful candidate will have a strong background in the study of pulmonary disease in laboratory animals and humans and vast experience working with in vitro model systems of environmental disease susceptibility. SUMMARY:Associate Scientist - Biomarker Development Laboratory
DESCRIPTION:An Associate Scientist position is available in the Pathology Biomarker Development laboratory\, in the Department of Pathology. This lab studies molecular biomarkers of diagnostic\, prognostic and therapeutic significance for diseases affecting St. Jude patients. We evaluate the feasibility and clinical utility of novel assays\, to determine whether they may be integrated into clinical diagnostic practice. \n Currently\, our lab is working on utilizing Illumina methylation arrays as a diagnostic tool\, exploring the utility of cell free DNA to monitor response to therapy\, and investigating the use of protein microarrays to identify disease biomarkers and therapeutic targets.  \nPrevious experience with research techniques including genomic analysis\, NGS\, methylation profiling and protein analysis are all strongly preferred. SUMMARY:Research Scientist - Leukemia
DESCRIPTION:Dr. Kapil N. Bhalla is currently seeking a Research Scientist who will be responsible for conducting research in his NIH-funded laboratory. The focus of the basic and translational research in this laboratory includes the biology and developmental therapeutics related to epigenetic mechanisms involving histone deacetylases\, methyltransferases and demethylases\, BET proteins\, as well as the chaperone biology of heat shock proteins and their cancer relevant client proteins regulating cell growth\, differentiation and survival of the human leukemia stem/progenitor cells. \n\nThe preferred candidate will possess a Ph.D. in Biology\, Biological Sciences\, Life Sciences or related field; a keen interest and experience in cancer research and excellent English skills (both written and verbal).  The preferred candidate will have completed at least a 3 year Post-doctoral fellowship in an area relevant to the focus of research in Dr. Bhalla’s laboratory. In addition\, have the ability to troubleshoot in the design and conduct the laboratory studies. Experience in molecular studies involving gene transfection\, analysis of gene expression through QPCR\, microarrays\, immunoblots and flow cytometry\, as well as experience in chromatin immunoprecipitation studies\, evaluation of protein biochemistry with 2D gels and the yeast-two-hybrid system\, and tissue culture techniques is required. Experience in the ability to utilize CRISPR technology for gene editing and to utilize confocal microscopy for molecular imaging is highly desired. Experience in xenograft and genetically-engineered animal models of cancer and/or leukemia\, and confocal microscopy is also desired.  An outstanding research environment\, new laboratory and core facilities are provided. \n\nKEY FUNCTIONS \n  \n1. The basic and translational research focus of this laboratory includes epigenetic mechanisms involving histone deacetylases\, methyltransferases and demethylases\, heat shock proteins and their cancer and leukemia-relevant client proteins\, as well as transfection and functional analyses of genes regulating cell death/survival of human cancer cells. Experience in animal studies involving NOD/SCID or nude mice\, and mouse imaging (xenogen and MRI) is highly desirable. Experience in molecular techniques involving plasmid DNA preparations and transfection\, the analysis of gene expression including QPCR\, microarrays\, chromatin immunoprecipitation\, evaluation of protein biochemistry with 2D gels\, animal models\, the yeast-two-hybrid system\, confocal microscopy and tissue culture are also preferred. \n2. Plans\, organizes\, coordinates\, directs\, and participates in scientific research projects.  \nPerforms quality research in relation to current research projects\, and other identified needs. Interprets results of experiments\, and makes necessary changes in procedures when needed.  Compiles data sheets. \n3. Organizes and performs routine procedures involving molecular biology and biochemistry of RNA processing. Requires experience in tissue culture\, DNA & RNA preparation\, PCR\, DNA cloning\, protein synthesis and electrophoresis. \n  \nResponsible for providing laboratory services\, tissue culture\, processing research samples\, and/or cataloging samples as required. Interacts with the principal investigators\, postdoctoral fellows and other research personnel in communicating experimental design and results. \n4. Supervises the design\, development\, or adapting of equipment used in experiments or research to obtain desired results. Utilizes institutional and departmental databases to perform data retrieval for analysis.  Designs retrieval templates for standard queries.  Apply bio-statistical methods in analyzing clinical data such as pretreatment characteristics\, response to treatment\, toxicities\, and mortality\, etc.  \nConducts Library Work.  Finds and copies journal articles as required.  Reads and understands articles related to ongoing research.  Maintains references in a manual filing system.  Requires good reading and comprehension skills as well as diligence\, patience and ability to carry several heavy books at a time. \n9. Assemble samples\, reagents\, dry or wet ice\, data and packaging materials; draft a cover letter\, accurately and legibly fill out shipping labels; carry package to receiving area on ground floor prior to pick up.  Keep accurate legible logs of outgoing and incoming packages.  For incoming packages\, ascertain contents\, store at appropriate location\, file information sheets and notify principal investigator.  Update pertinent inventory logs. \n10. SUMMARY:Sr Research Assistant - Cancer Biology
DESCRIPTION:The lab is expanding their work on the molecular underpinnings of metastasis and are beginning to translate their findings into novel therapeutic approaches. Novel areas of interest include\, but are not limited to\, the role of epigenetics and metabolism in tumor progression and metastasis. We are also focused in understanding changes in transcriptome repertoire (coding and non-coding events) and the influence of genetic and epigenetic regulators during cancer progression and metastasis. Work in the lab is done in several in vitro as well as in vivo model systems. The lab is currently focusing on modelling prostate cancer in patient derived xenografts and in organoid culture.\n \nThe salary range is min $ 38\,000 mid $ 47\,500 max $ 57\,000.\n\n \nKEY FUNCTIONS:\n1. Animal Studies:   \nPerforming animal studies including injecting tumor cells\, monitoring and recording progress of experiments\, necropsy\, preparation of tissue samples for histological processing.  Animals include “nude” and conventional mice.\n \n2. Tissue Sections: \nPreparing frozen and fixed tissue sections for histological and immunostaining analysis of mouse and human tumor xenografts. Performing double and triple immunofluorescence and immunohistochemistry staining experiments\, including optimization of new antibodies and other reagents.\n \n3. Molecular Cytology Techniques:    \nPerforming molecular cytology techniques\, such as in situ hybridization\, X-gal staining\, BrdU and EdU incorporation\, and detection of hypoxia and cellular senescence.\n \n4. Laboratory Studies:  \nPerforms laboratory studies using complex techniques including tissue culture (maintaining mammalian cells\, growth assays\, drug response assays)\, nucleic acid extraction\, RT-PCR\, immunoblotting\, immunocytochemistry and immunohistochemistry.\n \n5.
