DESCRIPTION:GW’s Department of Microbiology\, Immunology\, and Tropical Medicine is searching for a full-time Research Assistant for Dr.Chiappinelli’s laboratory at the George Washington Cancer Center (https://smhs.gwu.edu/cancercenter/) and the Department of Microbiology\, Immunology\, & Tropical Medicine. Dr. Chiappinelli’s laboratory focuses on the epigenetic control of gene expression in cancer\, specifically of immune signaling in and from tumor cells. Our goal is to use epigenetic therapies to harness the power of the immune system to fight cancer.  \nThe Research Assistant will be responsible for performing experiments under the direction of the principal investigator in a biomedical research laboratory and contributing to general maintenance of the laboratory\, equipment and supplies. The individual will conduct experiments under the direct supervision of a postdoctoral fellow and will also receive mentoring and direct guidance from Dr. Chiappinelli in order to advance his/her career in academic research.  \nResponsibilities include: \n\nProvide assistance to research scientist\, postdoctoral scientists and lab manager\nOptimize\, develop\, qualify and execute the following assays: basic tissue culture\, PCR \, quantitative RT- PCR \, western blots\, and flow cytometry.\nGeneral maintenance of the laboratory. DESCRIPTION:The Simone Laboratory in the Radiation Oncology Department at Thomas Jefferson University Hospital in Philadelphia\, PA is seeking an outstanding post-doctoral fellow to work in the area of cancer and radiation biology. Our laboratory focuses on using metabolic manipulation such as dietary alterations\, to improve standard cancer therapy such as radiation and chemotherapy. Mechanistically\, our focus is on microRNA alterations and downstream effectors. Our laboratory has a focus on hormonally responsive cancers such as breast and prostate cancer using both in vitro and in vivo models. From the pre-clinical data generated in the Simone Laboratory\, we have now opened multiple clinical trials with hormone-driven cancer patients which allows for the laboratory to evaluate translational endpoints of our basic science research. \nExperience Required : The candidate must be highly motivated\, independent and interested in our projects. The candidate must have PhD in molecular biology\, cell biology or a cancer related field. Although not absolutely necessary\, the ideal candidate will preferably have some experience with caloric restriction\, epigenetics\, microRNA or radiation biology. Expertise in microarray analysis\, RT-PCR\, ChIP\, cloning\, mouse husbandry\, in vivo tumor experiments are also a plus. The successful candidate will of course have mentoring so that career goals can be achieved\, but must be able to independently generate hypotheses\, design experiments to test the hypothesis\, performs routine and more difficult procedures\, analyze data and coherently present results in the form of presentations\, abstracts\, manuscripts and the basis for grant writing\, preparation and submission. In addition\, qualified candidates should have strong verbal and written communication skills\, and a demonstrated record of scientific achievement through peer-reviewed publications. Successful\, well-motivated candidates will join a highly interactive\, interdisciplinary team of researchers with diverse backgrounds and expertise in a collaborative scientific environment. Preference will be given to individuals with these skill sets who are now completing their thesis work and have at least one high-impact publication.

The research will be focused on evaluation of the activity and the mechanism of action of novel small molecules blocking epigenetic proteins in cancer. This position requires the expertise in cell biology and molecular biology techniques\, including PCR\, qRT-PCR\, Western Blotting\, co-Immunoprecipitation\, ChIP\, ChIPSeq\, flow cytometry\, fluorescence microscopy\, immunostaining. Prior work experience with animals such as transgenic mice and xenograft models of cancer would be desired. Successful candidate will be a part of an interdisciplinary team focused on development and pre-clinical evaluation of novel anti-cancer drug candidates. Required Qualifications* \nApplicant must have PhD in biology or related field. The candidates must be a first author on at least 2-3 publications.
