Candidates who are excited about large/complex ‘omics’ data analysis and methods development for cancer research are encouraged to apply. Our lab is interested in studying genetic and epigenetic alterations during aging of normal hematopoietic stem cells and in leukemia stem cells that lead to genomic instability\, leukemia development and drug resistance. The lab utilizes bone marrow transplantation and genetic knockout mouse models\, stem cell biology\, and molecular and imaging techniques to study hematopoietic/leukemic stem cells\, and molecular regulation of genomic instability. DESCRIPTION:The Translational Leukemia Research Program at the Perlmutter Cancer Center and New York University (NYU) School of Medicine invites post-doctoral applications in the laboratory of Dr. Raoul Tibes\, the Director of Leukemia Program. The focus of the Laboratory is the molecular-genomic characterization of primary acute myeloid leukemia (AML)\, myelodysplastic syndrome (MDS) and myeloproliferative neoplasm (MPNs) in correlation of their response to current therapies and novel investigational agents\, and understanding the mechanisms of drug resistance. The Tibes laboratory has been instrumental in providing pre-clinical data based on functional genomic information for several novel treatments (i.e. epigenetic and apoptosis targeting combinations) that are currently in clinical trials for AML\, MDS and MPNs. The Tibes laboratory is highly collaborative and the successful candidate will work with leading academic clinicians and basic scientists at NYU\, other academic Cancer Centers\, and pharmaceutical companies to discover and delineate the clinical path for novel therapeutic agents. The laboratory publishes in high-impact journals and former members of the laboratory hold positions at academic institutions or biotech and pharmaceutical companies. \nCurrently available projects include: understanding the mechanisms of the anti-leukemic activity DNA damage repair interference by WEE1 and CHEK1 inhibition; characterizing epigenetic/hypomethylating agent resistance and the design of rational hypomethylating agent based combinations in AML and MDS; as well as novel therapeutic approaches for MPNs. \nThe successful candidate will have strong dedication and independence\, effectively communicate their work by publishing the results in premier journals and will be involved in grant writing with an opportunity to submit their own career awards. The applicant and projects will benefit from a scientifically stimulating environment\, with extensive resources and opportunities to collaborate within NYU and externally. There is close interaction with the PI and candidates will be actively involved in various aspects of translational cancer research and drug development. DESCRIPTION:Dr. Kapil N. Bhalla is currently seeking a Senior Research Scientist who will be responsible for conducting research in his NIH-funded laboratory. The focus of the basic and translational research in this laboratory includes the biology and developmental therapeutics related to epigenetic mechanisms involving histone deacetylases\, methyltransferases and demethylases\, BET proteins\, as well as the chaperone biology of heat shock proteins and their cancer relevant client proteins regulating cell growth\, differentiation and survival of the human leukemia stem/progenitor cells. The qualified candidate must possess a Ph.D. in Biology\, Biological Sciences\, Life Sciences or related field and a keen interest and experience in cancer research. The candidate must have completed at least a 3 year Post-doctoral fellowship in an area relevant to the focus of research in Dr. Bhalla’s laboratory. The qualified candidate must have the ability to troubleshoot in the design and conduct of the laboratory studies. Experience in molecular studies involving gene transfection\, analysis of gene expression through QPCR\, microarrays\, immunoblots and flow cytometry\, as well as experience in chromatin immunoprecipitation studies\, evaluation of protein biochemistry with 2D gels and the yeast-two-hybrid system\, and tissue culture techniques is required. Experience in the ability to utilize CRISPR technology for gene editing and to utilize confocal microscopy for molecular imaging is highly desired. Experience in xenograft and genetically-engineered animal models of cancer and/or leukemia\, and confocal microscopy is also desired. An outstanding research environment\, new laboratory and core facilities are provided.  \nThe salary range is: min-$53\,200\, mid-$66\,500 and max-$79\,800.  \nKEY FUNCTIONS  \nResearch Design and implementation  \nPlans\, organizes\, coordinates\, directs and conducts scientific research projects. Develops and maintains standard procedures and protocols to ensure the quality and integrity of the procedures performed. Coordinates with other investigators to provide appropriate support on analytical techniques. Maintains detailed experimental records\, evaluates resulting research data\, and presents findings to physicians and/or professional groups.  \nData Analysis  \nAnalyzes and evaluates research data and revises techniques and approaches to work problems. Works with the Principal Investigator on projects in the area of biomarker development and leukemia biology.
