SUMMARY:Research Scientist
DESCRIPTION:The University of New Mexico National Cancer Institute (NCI) Designated Comprehensive Cancer Center (UNMCCC)\, and the Department of Medicine\, Division of Molecular Medicine\, and the Department of Pathology at the UNM School of Medicine\, invite applications from established mid-career or senior scientists engaged in studies of cancer immunology with a focused interest in both basic and translational research. The successful applicant will develop a rigorous research program centered on cancer immunotherapy\, tumor immunology and/or inflammation in the cancer microenvironment. We seek scientists particularly focused on dissecting mechanisms of perturbed immune signaling in the tumor environment\, on analysis and modeling of pathways that mediate response or resistance to immune therapies\, and on signaling perturbations in the context of the tumor microenvironment that enhance or inhibit the immune response to cancer cells. Successful applicants will join a vibrant and highly collaborative research community in the UNMCCC Cancer Biology and Signaling Research Program whose research spans from fundamental discovery to translational and clinical science. Many program members have identified novel diagnostic and therapeutic targets in breast\, ovarian\, and colorectal cancers and hematologic malignancies and are developing novel targeted therapies in collaboration with the UNMCCC Early Phase Clinical Trails Unit. We particularly seek scientists who would collaborate and benefit from superb\, state-of-the-art core facilities in single molecule\, live cell\, and intra-vital imaging. Successful applicants will also benefit from collaboration with unique national centers and programs at the UNMCCC including: The Molecular Discovery and High Throughput Target Screening Center (nmmlsc.health.unm.edu); one of 6 of the nation’s Chemical Biology Consortium in The NCI NExT Program; and The New Mexico Center for the Spatiotemporal Modeling of Cell Signaling (stmc.health.unm.edu)\, an NIGMS-funded National Center for Systems Biology. Successful applicants will have a strong track record of sustained scientific accomplishments exemplified by peer-reviewed funding (NCI\, NIH\, or other agencies)\, high quality publications\, and collaborative research. DESCRIPTION:Post Doctoral Fellow positions are available in the laboratory of Dr. Matthew Weitzman\, at the Children’s Hospital of Philadelphia (CHOP) and the University of Pennsylvania (Penn). Our lab is part of the rich scientific environment on the CHOP/Penn campus that includes multiple areas of virology\, immunology\, cancer\, and epigenetics. We are located in the new Colket Translational Research Building as part of the Division of Cancer Pathobiology\, in the Department of Pathology & Laboratory Medicine. The lab is also part of the Center for Childhood Cancer Research (CCCR)\, the Center for Cellular & Molecular Therapeutics (CCMT)\, the Penn Institute for Immunology (IFI)\, the Penn Epigenetics program\, and Penn Center for AIDS Research (CFAR). \nThe lab’s research focuses on virus-host interactions and the use of viruses as model systems to study DNA repair\, signaling\, cell biology\, replication\, innate host defenses and gene delivery. We are interested in virus replication and the resulting cellular responses. We study the intersection of virus and host pathways during infection and how they reveal insights into fundamental cellular mechanisms. We are particularly interested in recognition and processing of viral genomes by DNA repair and APOBEC pathways. We are using virus systems to study signaling\, ubiquitination and degradation\, and transcriptional silencing. DESCRIPTION:The Slingerland lab at the University of Miami’s Sylvester Comprehensive Cancer Center seeks Postdoctoral Associates for research in cell cycle regulation and PI3K signaling\, to investigate novel pro-oncogenic roles of p27 in transcriptional regulation and epigenetics. Other projects pursue how estrogen receptor and NFKB pathways interact to link estrogens\, obesity\, inflammation\, and breast cancer stem cells. Projects require discretion and judgment in carrying out research activities within predetermined research scope and methodologies. DESCRIPTION:The Postdoc Research Fellow\, Epigenetic will function under the supervision of a Senior Scientist and Director of the Division of Genetics and Epigenetics. The laboratory has a long standing research program on epigenetics and DNA methylation in normal human development and in common diseases\, including cancer\, Down syndrome\, Alzheimer’s disease and other neurodegenerative disorders\, and autoimmune diseases. Areas of current emphasis include mechanistic studies on genetic-epigenetic interactions that occur in cis and in trans\, using both human samples and mouse models\, and the use of epigenomic mapping as a ‘post-GWAS’ method to identify genes and DNA variants that underlie disease susceptibility. We are also studying epigenetically-acting anti-cancer drugs\, seeking to understand how these agents affect tumor cells and stromal and immune system cells in the tumor microenvironment. Opportunities for post-doctoral training in our group therefore encompass the areas of genome and epigenome analysis using whole genome and targeted approaches in human samples and informative mouse models\, the development of useful bioinformatic methods\, and pre-clinical studies of epigenetically-acting anti-cancer therapies and their effects on the tumor microenvironment in tumor-prone mouse models.\n\n\n\nResponsibilities\n\n\n\n1. Unique to biological systems is their emergent complexity and self-organization\, which is deeply connected to gene regulation. Understanding gene regulation has been a major focus of molecular biology. Genetic information is encoded in the linear sequence of DNA\, and despite all cells in the human body having the same genetic information\, they each behave quite differently. For example\, skin cells and immune cells exhibit dramatically distinct functions and morphologies. This occurs because different types of cells have different sets of genes turned on or off\, a feature called epigenetics. How is this achieved? It turns out that potentially stable and heritable information\, i.e. epigenetic information\, is encoded outside of the primary DNA sequence. Nature has developed a sophisticated system of proteins (“writers”\, “erasers” and “readers”) to manipulate this epigenetic information. The epigenetic marks and respective regulators play a critical role in establishing cell identity; their dysregulation is a major hallmark of diseases like cancer. MIEL combines fluorescence detection of epigenetic marks with automated cell imaging and machine learning to profile and quantify the “epigenetic signatures” of individual cells. \nThe candidate will investigate the epigenetic heterogeneity at the single cell level and the asymmetry during stem cell division in normal neurogenesis and in brain tumors. SUMMARY:Post Doctoral Scientist
DESCRIPTION:A Postdoctoral Scientist position is available for a skilled and motivated scientist in the Laboratory of Dr. Maho Shibata in the Department of Anatomy and Cell Biology and the Cancer Center at the George Washington University School of Medicine and Health Sciences. \nDr. Shibata’s lab applies concepts from developmental biology and stem cell biology to prostate cancer research. The lab uses genetically engineered mouse models\, explant cultures\, and 3D organoid culture systems to study androgen signaling during prostate development\, and to identify novel molecular drivers of castration-resistant prostate cancer. There are multiple project possibilities. \nDuties include: \n\nIndependently design experiments\, collect and analyze data\, and assist collaborators\nPresent findings in group meetings and internal and external scientific meetings\nPrepare and submit postdoctoral fellowship applications\nWrite and publish research manuscripts\nSupervise and train students\nPerform other duties as assigned. The omission of specific duties does not preclude the supervisor from assigning duties that are logically related to the position.\n\nOur lab is located in the George Washington University (GW) Cancer Center in the highly urban center of Washington DC\, on the top floor of the state-of-the-art Science and Engineering Hall\, which opened in 2016. The GW Cancer Center brings together cancer research\, clinical cancer care\, and cancer control/prevention and outreach initiatives at GW. The District of Columbia faces prominent health disparities in several cancers\, including prostate cancer. For example\, cancer mortality among African Americans in D.C. is 10.9% higher than the national average. D.C. also has the highest percentage of individuals identifying as lesbian\, gay\, bisexual or transgender (LGBT\, 10% of the District’s population) when compared to the 50 U.S. states\, and the largest number of same-sex couple households. GW is developing initiatives that address cancer within these communities\, and will endeavor to become a national leader in advocating for policies to better understand and address health disparities.\nGW has demonstrated a strong commitment to cancer research by recruiting expert researchers in establishing the GW Cancer Center to grow and diversify cancer research locally. The training and education of the next generation of young cancer researchers is one of the GW Cancer Center’s top priorities. \nMinimum Qualifications: \nQualified candidates will hold a PhD in a related discipline.
