SUMMARY:Senior Research Scientist
DESCRIPTION:Dr. Kapil N. Bhalla is currently seeking a Senior Research Scientist who will be responsible for conducting research in his NIH-funded laboratory. The focus of the basic and translational research in this laboratory includes the biology and developmental therapeutics related to epigenetic mechanisms involving histone deacetylases\, methyltransferases and demethylases\, BET proteins\, as well as the chaperone biology of heat shock proteins and their cancer relevant client proteins regulating cell growth\, differentiation and survival of the human leukemia stem/progenitor cells. The qualified candidate must possess a Ph.D. in Biology\, Biological Sciences\, Life Sciences or related field and a keen interest and experience in cancer research. The candidate must have completed at least a 3 year Post-doctoral fellowship in an area relevant to the focus of research in Dr. Bhalla’s laboratory. The qualified candidate must have the ability to troubleshoot in the design and conduct of the laboratory studies. Experience in molecular studies involving gene transfection\, analysis of gene expression through QPCR\, microarrays\, immunoblots and flow cytometry\, as well as experience in chromatin immunoprecipitation studies\, evaluation of protein biochemistry with 2D gels and the yeast-two-hybrid system\, and tissue culture techniques is required. Experience in the ability to utilize CRISPR technology for gene editing and to utilize confocal microscopy for molecular imaging is highly desired. Experience in xenograft and genetically-engineered animal models of cancer and/or leukemia\, and confocal microscopy is also desired. An outstanding research environment\, new laboratory and core facilities are provided. \nThe salary range is: min-$53\,200\, mid-$66\,500 and max-$79\,800. \nKEY FUNCTIONS \nResearch Design and implementation \nPlans\, organizes\, coordinates\, directs and conducts scientific research projects. Develops and maintains standard procedures and protocols to ensure the quality and integrity of the procedures performed. Coordinates with other investigators to provide appropriate support on analytical techniques. Within each these areas\, discovery research\, translational research\, and early clinical development are integrated into a single team. \nSummary/Scope\nThe early drug discovery effort of our team in the Protein Homeostasis TCoE is focused on the exploration of the molecular underpinning of cancer development and progression\, and the design and characterization of novel antitumor agents. We are seeking a PhD scientist to define the underlying mechanism of response and resistance to novel cereblon modulating agents targeting protein turnover and function for the treatment of hematological cancers. More specifically\, Next Generation Sequencing tools\, proteomics and molecular/genetic approaches will be utilized to delineate the molecular\, genetic and epigenetic signatures of cancer cell specific addiction programs\, which could be manipulated by cereblon modulating agents to achieve antitumor activity. The understanding of mechanism of action of these agents will help us identify the right disease indications\, select sensitive patient population and devise rational combination therapies to combat resistance. The Research Assistant will be responsible for performing cell culture\, generation of cell lines harboring tumor-derived mutations\, cell-based chromatin assays (eg. ChIP\, DNA methylation and/or produce next-generation sequencing libraries)\, measurements of small molecule activity\, and cellular differentiation assays. Will record data and analyze results\, maintain and perform experiments with cells in tissue culture\, and maintain inventory of frozen cell stocks.\n\n\n\n\nJob Requirements\n\n\n\nBachelor’s degree in science required; Master’s degree preferred. DESCRIPTION:An LSRP position is available in the laboratory of Dr. Matt van de Rijn in the Department of Pathology at Stanford University. \n\nOur lab applies cutting-edge high-throughput methods to study soft tissue sarcomas. We seek to understand the molecular underpinnings of these cancers\, with the goal of developing new diagnostic\, prognostic\, and/or predictive biomarkers and therapeutic targets that can be applied in clinical practice.  Our research interests include the genetic\, epigenetic\, and transcriptomic characteristics of various types of soft tissue tumors including leiomyosarcoma and leiomyoma. The LSRP will be involved in a research project that aims to perform molecular analyses of these tumors on a single cell level\, in order to better understand the biology\, evolution and clinical behavior of these tumors\, and to identify novel therapeutic strategies. The BFG brings together teams specializing in bioinformatics and computational biology\, functional analysis of the genome and epigenome coupled with next generation sequencing\, epigenetic profiling\, and genome editing\, to provide a complete pipeline for identifying the functional consequences of genetic and epigenetic variation in cancer risk\, subtypes\, and outcomes. Dr. Hitchins’ group focuses in particular on the role of genetic and epigenetic variants in high-risk cancers\, and on DNA methylation markers of cancer\, as applied to the detection of circulating tumor DNAs.\n\nDr. Hitchins\, is looking for a Postdoctoral scientist to join the Center for Bioinformatics and Functional Genomics to investigate methylation markers specific to cancer that may be exploited as biomarkers for cancer risk stratification\, detection\, diagnosis\, prediction of treatment outcomes\, and monitoring of treatment outcomes. The ideal candidate we are searching for will have wet-lab training in genetic\, transcriptional and/or methylation analysis methods that include next generation sequencing based assays\, methylation analysis techniques\, and solid statistical analysis skills. DESCRIPTION:The proposed position will be located at the Dermatology Research labs\, specifically in the DiNardo Lab. The dermatology labs are located at the Altman Clinical and Translational Research Institute (ACTRI) at UC San Diego\, established in 2010 as part of a national consortium of 60 medical research institutions created to energize bench-to-bedside efforts. The structure was opened in 2016 and encompasses 359\,000 square feet of offices\, state-of-the-art laboratories and clinical space (including a research pharmacy) and houses a multitude of distinct research endeavors as described before. \nThe Lab Assistant will engage in assisting postdoctoral fellow and senior scientists working on skin innate immune projects related to microbiome and immune-tolerance. Under supervision\, the lab assistant will assist with preparation and execution of experiments using biological and chemical materials. Tasks will include preparation of standardized media and reagents; upkeep of laboratory apparatus and facilities; ordering and organization of laboratory supplies; record-keeping and organization of experimental outputs on the laboratory computer notebook and databases. \nThe assistant will have an opportunity to observe and aid senior laboratory members with experiments involving cell culture\, PCR\, specimen sectioning\, molecular cloning\, genotyping and gel electrophoresis. \nMINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS\n\nGraduation from high school or a GED and one (1) year of laboratory experience or two (2) years of college including courses in the biological sciences; or an equivalent combination of education and experience.\nPossess the knowledge and abilities essential to the successful performance of the duties assigned to the position.\nProven experience doing standard and routine laboratory tasks.
