SUMMARY:Data analyst - Computational Biology
DESCRIPTION:The Lawrence Lab at the Massachusetts General Hospital Cancer Center seeks a data analyst to join an interdisciplinary team of computational biologists from MGH and the Broad Institute\, working at the forefront of cancer research and treatment. We use computation as a powerful microscope to study both the fundamental biology of cancer initiation and progression\, as well the diagnosis and treatment of cancer patients in the hospital setting. \nCurrent research interests of the Lawrence Lab: \nCancer evolution: We are using genomic profiling to observe the processes of clonal evolution during the course of a patient’s disease and treatment.\nResistance to targeted therapies: We are actively investigating mechanisms of drug resistance and how to combat it.\nSingle-cell sequencing: New approaches allow us to dissect a tumor down to single cells and investigate RNA expression\, DNA mutations\, and epigenetic changes all in single cells.\nLiquid biopsies: We work with state-of-the-art technologies that can monitor the progression of cancer through a simple blood draw.\nMutational processes: We are studying mutational background patterns to learn about DNA damage repair deficiencies\, which can be biomarkers for the use of genotoxic therapy.\nCancer driver genes: We are working to understand specific driver mutations that deactivate tumor suppressors or activate oncogenes.\nPrincipal Duties: \nApply existing computational pipelines\, and help develop novel pipelines\, for analyzing cancer data sets to assess data quality\, critically review and analyze results\, communicate results to biologists\, computational biologists\, software engineers and clinicians.\nExplore novel data visualization methods\, with emphasis on integrating diverse data types and extracting clinically relevant insights.\nWork with Cancer Center researchers to understand experimental procedures and the kinds of data produced (e.g. DNA sequencing\, RNA sequencing\, epigenetic readouts\, clinical outcome annotations). Meet and discuss with clinical and experimental colleagues to identify analytical challenges and goals.\nContribute to scientific writing and creation of data figures to be included in research publications reporting novel discoveries made in the lab and clinic. \nQualifications: \nB.A./B.S. (M.A./M.S. preferred) in one of Computational Biology\, Bioinformatics\, Biology\, Biochemistry\, Computer Science\, Mathematics\, Physics\, or a related field.\nAt least 2 years of experience in scientific research.\nIndependent\, self-motivated drive to push research forward.\nExcellent programming skills (using any of Matlab\, R\, Java\, Python\, Perl\, C\, etc.)\nNimble approach to programming and data analysis\, with an emphasis on simple\, intuitive\, reasoning: quickly open unfamiliar datasets\, generate simple visualizations to project the data onto our brains as usefully as possible\, to stimulate hypothesis generation and the next steps of the analysis.\nComfort using Word\, Excel\, Powerpoint to communicate results between team members.\nAbility to work together with multi-disciplinary teams comprising physicians\, biologists\, statisticians\, and software engineers.\nFluency in spoken and written English.\nExperience in machine learning\, cloud computing (e.g. Google Cloud) a plus.

SUMMARY:Assistant/Associate Professor
DESCRIPTION:The Department of Molecular and Structural Biochemistry at North Carolina State University invites applications for a tenure-track faculty position\, at the rank of either Assistant or Associate Professor\, in the broad area of structure\, function\, and mechanism\, with an emphasis on molecular systems in complex disease states. \nThe position will be 80% Research and 20% Teaching\, which is a typical split for research programs in the department.\nThe successful candidate will be expected to develop a rigorous\, independently funded research program in systems level examination of biological mechanisms using modern structural\, chemical biology\, imaging\, and/or quantitative analytical methods. We are especially interested in candidates who use one or more macromolecular structural determination and characterization methods including but not limited to NMR spectroscopy\, cryo-electron microscopy\, sophisticated biophysical analysis\, or x-ray crystallography\, and apply molecular insights to understand systems with translational application in medicine or agriculture. \nThis position will have opportunities to collaborate with biochemistry faculty who have expertise in nutrient/hormone metabolism and disease\, protein structure determination\, and quantitative metabolomics\, and will bridge collaborative efforts between the departments of Chemistry\, Chemical and Biomolecular Engineering\, and Molecular Biomedical Sciences. In particular\, this position is expected to benefit from interfaces with research programs that are focused on signal transduction pathways\, epigenetic mechanisms\, metabolic flux\, cancer metabolomics\, lipid metabolism\, biosensors and signaling\, drug development and regenerative medicine. This faculty member will further benefit from a rich environment for protein structure and metabolomics research at the basic/translational interface\, as well as access to state-of-the-art macromolecular structure determination instruments through university-supported facilities. \nNC State’s location in the Research Triangle offers collaborative opportunities with the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill\, Duke University\, and the National Institute of Environmental Health Science\, as well as numerous industry partners. The proposed faculty member may be considered for an affiliative appointment in relevant departments and assist in team teaching at the graduate level with other departments as appropriate.
