SUMMARY:Ruth L- Kirschstein National Research service F30 Award
DESCRIPTION:The NCI Ruth L. Kirschstein National Research service F30 Award supports promising doctoral candidates who will perform dissertation research and training for an MD/PhD degree in a scientific health-related field relevant to the mission of the NCI during the tenure of the award. Applicants for the F30 must be within 48 months of matriculation into an accredited MD/PhD program at the time of application. \nNCI requires a clear cancer focus in graduate research training and gives funding priority to applications whose primary sponsor has cancer-related R01 or R01-like\, peer-reviewed research grants at the time of application and the time of the award. For the NCI F30 Award\, R01-like research funding includes peer-reviewed research grants from other federal sources and private foundations with a duration of at least 3 years with a minimum of $150\,000 direct costs per year. The primary sponsor is expected to maintain such grant support during the project period. Grants under a no-cost extension do not qualify. \nReminder to NCI Fellowship grantees: Changes in the Project\nIndividual fellowship awards are made for training at a specific institution under the guidance of a particular sponsor. Prior approval by NCI is required for a transfer of the award to another institution\, a change in sponsor\, or a significant project change. If the primary sponsor plans to be absent for a continuous period of more than 3 months\, an interim sponsor must be named by the institution and approved in writing by NCI.

SUMMARY:Grand Challenge Awards- Challenge 7: Deliver biologically active macromolecules to and all cells in the body to effectively treat cancer
DESCRIPTION:In recent years\, scientists have been experimenting with using large molecules called ‘macromolecules’ to target and destroy tumour cells. These macromolecules can disrupt the processes that cancer cells use to survive – for example by stopping them from growing or by flagging their presence to the body’s immune system. \nThis approach works very well on cancer cells in the laboratory\, but unlike conventional ‘small molecule’ treatments like aspirin\, it’s really difficult to deliver these molecules to\, and then into\, the cells where they need to act. \nIf we could work out ways of delivering these macromolecules to any and every cell in the body\, it would not only create a totally new way to treat cancer but would have a huge impact on other diseases too.

SUMMARY:Grand Challenge Awards- Challenge 6: Develop innovative approaches to target the cancer super-controller MYC
DESCRIPTION:Myc is a gene that is mutated and persistently switched on in the majority of human cancers – it’s a hallmark of the disease in nearly seven out of ten cases. \nMutant and overactive Myc helps tumours survive\, and this strongly suggests that blocking its function would be a powerful approach to treating many types of cancer. \nOf course\, Myc isn’t the only gene mutation that’s linked to cancer\, so why is this a Grand Challenge? It’s partly because the gene makes a protein (called MYC) that is a powerful ‘super controller’–a vital hub at the centre of a vast communication network within cells\, and the properties of the MYC protein itself make it really difficult to design a drug against it. \nThat’s why we’re putting out a call to the global research community – this challenge needs more than just money\, it needs new thinking\, innovation and a wide range of expertise.

SUMMARY:Grand Challenge Awards- Challenge 5: Find a way of mapping tumours at the molecular and cellular level
DESCRIPTION:Cancer cells live in complex communities. Just like houses in a city\, each cell in a tumour is different from its neighbour\, and relies on infrastructure to support its existence. \nThere are different neighbourhoods–some worse than others. Where we have roads\, tumours contain blood vessels that deliver nutrients\, and act as highways for different cell types to move around. And when a tumour spreads\, the cancer cells themselves use these blood ‘roads’ to migrate. \nWhat we really need is a Google Earth-like view of a tumour. If we could make a 3D map\, we’d find new targets for treatment and\, eventually\, could use this view to track what’s going on in real time\, such as in response to treatment.

SUMMARY:Grand Challenge Awards- Challenge 4: Distinguish between lethal cancers that need treating\, and non-lethal cancers that don’t
DESCRIPTION:It’s a hard concept to imagine\, but not all of the things we call ‘cancer’ need to be treated. Some ‘cancers’ are temporary changes to cells that will reverse or disappear with time\, and others are so slow-growing they’ll never cause any problems. \nFor some cancers\, over-diagnosis leads to unnecessary treatment and avoidable side effects. In others\, we desperately need to be able to detect the disease earlier – but do so in a more accurate way. \nIn lung cancer\, for example\, X-ray scans can’t distinguish between spots where there is nothing to worry about\, or the early stages of an aggressive cancer that needs prompt treatment. \nThis is a Grand Challenge that would both save lives and improve quality of life – for millions of people worldwide.

SUMMARY:Grand Challenge Awards- Challenge 3: Discover how unusual patterns of mutation are induced by different cancer-causing events
DESCRIPTION:Certain things in the world around us\, such as tobacco smoke\, cause cancer. They do this by triggering chemical changes inside cells\, leading to errors in the reading of the DNA genetic code. \nThe patterns of these DNA changes are different for each cause (or ‘carcinogen’) – almost as if they are signing their names on our genomes – and scientists can identify known carcinogens from their chemical signatures. \nBut there are unusual signatures whose origins we don’t know\, caused in ways we haven’t yet identified. And in cancers caused by factors such as obesity\, there will be many different signatures\, and we don’t yet know how to pick them apart. \nSo in the same way that a detective uses forensic evidence from a crime scene to identify a criminal\, we need to work backwards to find these cancer-causing events\, to prevent the cancers they’re causing.

SUMMARY:Grand Challenge Awards- Challenge 2: Eradicate EBV-induced cancers from the world
DESCRIPTION:Around 19 in 20 adults carry the Epstein Barr Virus (EBV)\, making it one of the most common human viral infections. \nIn most people\, EBV is relatively harmless\, although it’s the cause of glandular fever\, “kissing disease”. But in some parts of the world it’s a big problem – every year\, EBV infection accounts for 200\,000 new cases of cancer worldwide\, and more than 140\,000 deaths. \nTo eradicate EBV-induced cancers from the world is a grand challenge that would make a significant difference to global health\, and is a fully achievable ambition.

SUMMARY:Grand Challenge Awards - Challenge 1: Develop vaccines to prevent non-viral cancers
DESCRIPTION:Vaccines already exist that prevent cancers caused by infection\, such as against the human papilloma virus that causes some cervical cancers. But this challenge is to develop vaccines that work against non-viral cancers\, which are caused by faults in our DNA that accumulate over time. \nThat’s what really makes this a Grand Challenge. Because cancer is a disease of the body’s own cells\, it is more challenging to coax the immune system to recognize and eliminate early stage cancers\, where the difference between healthy cells and abnormal cells might be very small. \nBut the promise is huge: imagine if we could vaccinate against cancer as we do for infectious diseases such as TB and measles. Grand Challenge could make this a reality.
