The Director, Scientific Learning is a recognized thought leader and expert in learning and development. He/she works with the VP of Scientific Learning to develop the global Scientific Learning strategy at MedImmune, to support business needs and the company’s 2025 vision. He/she owns delivery and execution of the strategy at MedImmune’s three Research and Development (R&D) sites (Cambridge UK, Gaithersburg, South San Francisco). He/she works collaboratively with senior science stakeholders to determine training needs and to design and implement appropriate learning solutions for R&D. He/she partners effectively with experts in the business, the Scientific Learning Team and external vendors to deliver learning solutions. The Director line manages a group of approximately 10 staff in the US, including training specialists, media specialists and presentation developers who deliver bespoke learning solutions for MedImmune. The Director works collaboratively with the Director of Standards who is responsible for the Learning Management System (LMS) at MedImmune and who oversees development & maintenance of LMS learning plans in a highly regulated and compliant environment. This position reports to the Vice President of Scientific Learning, who is responsible for the global team.

Main Duties and Responsibilities

  • He/she is a recognized learning expert who provides thought-leadership to the organization for current and future learning trends, technology and tools.
  • He/she works with the VP Scientific Learning and senior science leaders to develop and deliver the Scientific Learning Strategy for MedImmune, in line with business needs.
  • He/she is a visible leader, who forms strong relationships with science & business leaders in the organisation to understand learning needs, and who partners with business leaders to develop learning solutions.
  • He/She is responsible for delivering the Scientific Learning Strategy globally at MedImmune, leading end-to-end learning solutions including design/delivery, content curation, needs analysis, vendor relationships and management and measurement of learning programs.
  • He/she is a strong communicator who is comfortable in the presence of senior leadership and can present strategy and progress with ease.
  • He/she provides direction to the Scientific Learning team globally (Cambridge & Gaithersburg) to deliver the Scientific Learning strategy & vision, ensuring that the team has appropriate resources and capabilities to deliver the work.
  • He/she develops criteria for evaluating and analyzing effectiveness and success of all training activities and is able to demonstrate the impact & value of programs to senior leadership.
  • He/she oversees sourcing, evaluation, selection and management of external program partners to deliver scientific and clinical curricula.
  • He/she is well-versed in social media skills and has a comprehensive communication & marketing strategy for all Scientific Learning programs, making full use of internal communication channels (e.g. Workplace, plasma screens, e-mail, videos, podcasts etc.)
  • He/she line manages the US Scientific Learning team, providing team vision & purpose, driving strong employee engagement, recruiting & retaining strong talent, and creating a positive/dynamic working environment to drive effective performance.
  • He/she Collaborates with other line managers in Scientific Learning to drive best practices and provide development opportunities for staff.
  • He/she supports competency development for staff through mentoring, training, and team support
  • He/she is responsible for the Scientific Learning budget, including budget planning, tracking and management.

Essential Requirements

  • Master’s degree, in a scientific, creative, learning, communication or a related field. Additional qualifications in learning & development, science or communications a plus.
  • At least 10 years of relevant experience of designing, developing, and delivering high-quality, learning programs, ideally in a scientific or healthcare environment
  • Demonstrated ability to multi-task and manage high performance demands, with minimal oversight.
  • Demonstrated strategic skills including a high level of creativity, innovation, and proactive problem solving with an ability to manage effectively through ambiguity and change toward focused solutions.
  • Demonstrates strong collaborative communications skills including the ability to engage with a diverse client base, manage through conflict, and recognize and resolve broad based complex issues.
  • Demonstrates enterprise thinking to implement and deliver learning solutions that will work across the business where required.
  • Demonstrated ability to lead large groups of people, in a global, cross-functional environment.
  • Strong business acumen, solid project management skills, and results orientation required.
  • Excellent communication and presentation skills.
  • Advanced knowledge of adult learning principles and instructional design
  • Ability to flex style to audience, and work closely with MedImmune senior leaders
  • Comfort with, and proven ability to, deliver in ambiguity
  • Experience working with all levels of management and consulting with key business stakeholders. An ability to influence for greater outcomes.
