Associate Scientist
December 9, 2018 - January 10, 2019
An Associate Scientist position is available in the chemical biology group led by Dr. Grotegut. This group works on a diverse portfolio of projects, including but not limited to epigenetics and cancer, with SBP investigators and other collaborators. The group supports a variety of assays for high-throughput screening, high-content screening, and structure-activity relationship (SAR) determination for lead generation. The Associate Scientist will develop novel cell-based, biophysical, and biochemical assays, convert them to miniaturized 384-well/1536-well formats and perform their implementation for automation on available robotics systems, interacting with the supervisor and other Center teams.
Duties and Responsibilities
- Designs and performs experiments and procedures requiring specific or technical knowledge and laboratory techniques with minimal input from supervisor
- Uses different sources of literature and is capable of practically applying the information
- Develops novel cell-based and biochemical assays which will be converted to 384-well/ 1536-well format using automated liquid handlers and plate readers
- Analyses data independently, presents results in a concise way, and makes suggestions for the next logical steps
- Ability to troubleshoot and provide input on possible solutions
- Assists with the preparation of reports for pertinent projects
- Accurately documents own experiments in lab notebook (including tables, graphs, etc.) and/or Prebys Center-specific software (e.g. CBIS)
- Presents work to supervisor and may present work at lab and/or project meetings.
- Works collaboratively within team and together with other teams within the Prebys Center
- Train younger team members as needed
- Maintains infrastructure of laboratory as required
Required Skills
Required Experience
- BS/BA degree in scientific discipline such as biology, chemistry, or pharmacology and a minimum of three years’ experience or an equivalent combination of education, training and/or experience from which comparable knowledge, skills and abilities have been attained, is required. Five years’ experience is preferred.
- MS degree in scientific discipline such as biology, chemistry, or pharmacology with a minimum of one year of experience is preferred.
- Experience in drug discovery or applied laboratory research and strong experience in cell-based assay development, including strong experience with biochemical assays and mammalian cell culture is highly preferred.
Other Knowledge, Skills and Abilities
- Must have strong attention to detail
- Professional demeanor, excellent verbal and written communication skills
- Demonstrated ability to work in a highly interactive matrix environment
- Able to simultaneously handle multiple projects in a rapidly changing, deadline-driven environment
