Job Summary

The University of Michigan, Department of Pediatrics is seeking candidates for a Research Investigator position in the Division of Pediatric Hematology/Oncology.

Basic functions and responsibilities

Under direct supervision of the Principal Investigator perform scientific research in the field of pediatric oncology. Participate in a leadership role supervising junior research staff and support personnel. Participate in extra-mural grant writing and academic authorship.

Duties and responsibilities:

  • Independently implement technical procedures for assignments (50%), including:
    • Perform genetic manipulation and genetic analysis of MSC’s and cancer cell lines. (CRISPR-Cas9, CRISPR-I and RNAi) supervise/train lab members in these experiments
    • Perform immunofluorescence and confocal microscopy, supervise/train lab members in these experiments
    • Perform RNA-seq, ChIP-seq, Mass spec, Histone PTM and data integration analysis, supervise/train lab members in these experiments
  • Participate in formulating research methods and suggest options for improving quality
  • Assist other team members in their projects
  • Independently participate in academic authorship of manuscripts and grants related to lab work (25%)
  • Make recommendations on best technical approaches to investigate a scientific problem
  • Independently implement technical procedures for assignments.
  • Participate in laboratory meetings
  • Responsible for accurate record keeping
  • Interact with collaborators as necessary to provide interpretation of study results
  • Communicate and make recommendations to other scientists in the team
  • Train personnel in existing laboratory techniques and procedures, explain and demonstrate technology and equipment capabilities, operation limitation and outcomes (25%)

Supervision Received

Direction is received from the Principal Investigator. Staff members in this classification are expected to work independently and in collaboration with other laboratory personnel, regularly exercise good judgment in setting priorities, resolving operational problems and the application of procedures, methods and policies. 

 Supervision Exercised

Functional supervision may be exercised over lab assistant, graduate students and other junior personnel

Required Qualifications*

Qualifications Required: 

  • PhD degree and at least 3 years of postdoctoral experience in a recognized field of science directly related to the position
  • Exceptional work ethic in a highly competitive environment
  • Ability to communicate clearly the results of his/her experiments to other team members
  • Strong knowledge of molecular and cell biology, especially in the field of epigenetics and oncology
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Word, PowerPoint, Excel, and GraphPad Prism
  • Familiarity with basic laboratory instrumentation and maintenance of laboratory equipment 
  • Proficient in record keeping
  • A solid command of tissue culture and in conducting studies in an enhanced BSL-2 environment is necessary
  • Knowledge of bioinformatics tools for data analysis and interpretation
  • Hands on skills and experience with all standard molecular and cell biology techniques (e.g. qPCR, ChIP-PCR, IP and Co-IP, Cloning, Western blot, microscopy, genetic modification)
  • Advanced skills in ChIP-seq and proteomics approaches

Qualifications Desired:

  • Minimum seven years of directly related laboratory experience. Familiarity with University research administration policies and procedures
  • Fluorescence and Confocal microscopy experience
